Tanzania Visa Guide – Requirements, Costs, and Application Process

Traveling to Tanzania requires most international visitors to obtain a visa. The process is straightforward and can be done online through the official Tanzania Immigration e-Visa portal or upon arrival at major entry points such as Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar.

Tanzania Visa Requirements:

To successfully apply for a Tanzania visa, travelers typically need:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity from the date of entry.

  • A recent passport-sized photograph (digital copy for e-visa).

  • Completed visa application form (online or paper form at arrival).

  • Proof of travel arrangements such as flight tickets, confirmed hotel bookings, or safari itineraries.

  • Proof of sufficient funds (sometimes requested).

  • Supporting documents for special visas, such as an invitation letter for business, volunteer, or study purposes.

Important Tips for Travelers

  • Apply in advance: If choosing the e-visa option, apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel to avoid delays.
  • Carry USD cash: If applying on arrival, immigration prefers payments in US dollars. Make sure the bills are clean and newer than 2009.
  • Check for updated rules: Visa policies may change, so confirm requirements with your airline, travel agent, or the Tanzania Immigration website before departure.
  • Yellow Fever Certificate: Required if traveling from or transiting through a yellow fever–endemic country.
  • Overstaying penalties: Always respect visa validity; overstays can lead to fines or legal issues.
