Community Development

Community Development

Our Commitment

Investing in People, Not Just Places

Meru Slope Tours and Safaris actively promotes community development by supporting women's empowerment and education. Through sustainable tourism, it invests in local projects, creates job opportunities, and enhances education for young girls. By partnering with local organizations, the company ensures its impact extends beyond tourism, fostering lasting positive change in communities.

We believe a safari should leave more behind than footprints. Every itinerary we run channels a share of its value back into the region it passes through into classrooms, small businesses, and the households of the people who make each trip possible. It isn't a side project; it's built into how we operate.

Over the years, this approach has grown from a handful of informal partnerships into an ongoing relationship with schools, women's groups, and community organizers across the Arusha region people who know their communities far better than we ever could, and who guide where support is needed most.

Empowerment

Girls' Education and Community Empowerment

Girls face barriers like poverty, cultural norms, and violence that prevent access to education a global challenge documented by UNESCO's Global Partnership for Girls' and Women's Education. Education empowers them, protecting their rights, and offering a pathway to a brighter, more independent future.

Investing in girls' education transforms lives and communities. Educated girls become financially independent, contribute to social progress, and create a ripple effect, fostering sustainable development and positive change for future generations.

Meru Slope Tours and Safaris actively supports girls' education through sustainable tourism, funding programs, providing resources, and collaborating with local organizations to ensure girls have access to education and opportunities.

By prioritizing education, we help empower girls to become leaders, changemakers, and role models creating lasting social impact and fostering a just, prosperous, and sustainable world for all. Support often reaches a girl for years, not just a single term, so the difference compounds well beyond the classroom.

Women's Enterprise

Invest in a Small Business Owner

By booking your tour with Meru Slope Tours and Safaris, you're supporting women entrepreneurs. A portion of our profits goes directly toward helping women start or expand their own small businesses work that lines up closely with UN Women's economic empowerment programs, which have shown how women's financial independence lifts entire households and communities.

These hardworking women are eager to build or grow successful businesses. With a modest amount of support, they can realize their dreams and contribute to the community's economic growth.

Your contribution creates a lasting impact well beyond the initial support — as these businesses grow, they in turn strengthen the local economy around them, making a significant difference in the lives of many.

By supporting small business owners through Meru Slope Tours and Safaris, you're not just enjoying a tour you're helping create opportunities, build stronger communities, and make a meaningful impact on women's empowerment. Many of these businesses tailoring, produce stalls, craft cooperatives go on to employ other women in the same neighborhood, so the support rarely helps just one person.

Impact

Why This Work Matters

By addressing local challenges through education, economic opportunities, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements, communities become more self-sufficient and resilient.

Investing in this work fosters justice, equality, and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping their future. When individuals, organizations, and businesses work together, they create lasting change that benefits generations to come.

Through initiatives like women's empowerment, youth engagement, and environmental sustainability, we pave the way for economic growth and social harmony transforming lives, uplifting marginalized groups, and building stronger, more connected societies.

Ultimately, lasting progress requires collective effort, continuous support, and innovative solutions. By actively participating in these initiatives, we contribute to a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and create a better future.

None of this replaces the role of government or larger institutions — but it fills real gaps in the meantime, and it does so in a way that's transparent, local, and directly accountable to the people it's meant to help.

Anyone Can Take Part

Experience It: Meet the People You Support

Most travelers are told their trip "gives back" but never see how. We invite you to see for yourself. When you book, tell us you'd like to meet the people we support, and we will arrange a visit with our local partners.

Meet Women Entrepreneurs

Hear their stories in their own words, see their businesses, and learn how support is passed along to help the next woman get started. Buy their products directly so your money reaches them with no middleman.

Learn About Girls' Education

Where it is appropriate and welcomed, meet the local organizations and educators we work with and learn how support reaches girls. Visits always respect the girls' privacy, safety and schedules their learning comes first.

Meet Your Local Team and Their Communities

Learn about the communities where your guides, drivers, cooks and camp staff come from, and see how a steady, fair job supports a whole household.

Share a Local Experience

Share a meal, learn about local crafts or farming, or talk with people about daily life. The aim is an honest exchange, never a staged show.

A visit can be woven into any safari itinerary added as a stop on the way between parks, or arranged on a rest day or requested entirely on its own, even if you're not booking a safari at all. Just let us know what you'd prefer when you get in touch, and we'll build it around your schedule.

Our Standards

Visiting Responsibly

A community visit only works if it benefits the people hosting it as much as it does the visitor. Our approach follows the community-focused principles set out by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and these guide every visit we arrange:

  • Consent and respect. Visits happen only where people are happy to welcome guests.
  • Dignity over spectacle. We never treat people or poverty as an attraction.
  • Privacy and child protection. Please ask before photographing anyone, especially children, and don't give money or gifts directly to children — it can undermine local programs and school attendance.
  • Fair benefit. Hosts and guides are fairly compensated, and your purchases go directly to them.
  • Small groups. We keep visits personal and unhurried.

If at any point a guide feels a planned visit no longer feels welcome or comfortable for the host, it's rescheduled or skipped — no exceptions.
