Overview
As the wildebeest migration moves into late spring and early summer, the herds gradually spread out across the plains of the Serengeti. By the end of April, they begin heading west, with many groups traveling through the central Serengeti, particularly the Seronera area. The Southern Plains just south of Seronera also host large numbers of wildebeest during April and May, making it one of the best times to witness the migration in this part of the Serengeti.

By June, the majority of the herds can be found in the Western Corridor, a narrow but critical stretch of land that runs from the western part of Seronera to the Serengeti National Park’s western border. This area presents one of the migration’s most dramatic moments: the Grumeti River crossing. As the herds head northward, they must cross this perilous river, often drawing large crowds of predators like crocodiles, lions, and hyenas.

Witnessing a Grumeti River crossing is a rare and unpredictable event, requiring a combination of timing, patience, and luck. The migration through the Western Corridor is one of the most thrilling parts of the journey, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the challenges and dangers faced by the wildebeest as they continue their epic trek across the Serengeti.

Tour Plan

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet your safari guide, and transfer to Arusha for a safari briefing. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore Arusha town or relax at your hotel before the adventure begins.

Depart early from Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park (2.5-3 hours), famous for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. Enjoy a full-day game drive along the Tarangire River, where lions, leopards, giraffes, and wildebeest gather. After an exciting day, head to your lodge in the Tarangire area for the night.

After breakfast, drive from Tarangire through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, entering Serengeti National Park via Naabi Hill Gate (5-6 hours). Enjoy an en-route game drive as you head toward the Western Corridor, home to the Grumeti River, where massive herds of wildebeest and zebras attempt dangerous river crossings, often ambushed by crocodiles. Arrive in the afternoon and explore the migration hotspots before heading to your accommodation.

Spend the day tracking the migration in the Western Corridor, focusing on the Grumeti River and Kirawira region, where predator-prey interactions unfold. Look for massive crocodiles, big cats, and scavengers like hyenas while exploring the rolling plains. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush and continue with an afternoon game drive before returning to camp for the evening.

After an early morning game drive in Serengeti, depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area (4-5 hours), arriving at the crater rim before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for a spectacular safari. Spot the Big Five, including rhinos, elephants, lions, and large buffalo herds, while enjoying a picnic lunch near a hippo pool. In the late afternoon, ascend from the crater and drive to Karatu for an overnight stay.

Drive back from Karatu to Arusha (2-3 hours), with an optional stop at a Maasai village or the Shanga Foundation for cultural experiences and souvenir shopping. After lunch, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight.
